It’s important and responsible to be aware of the trash island that’s bigger than the size of Texas is just floating in the ocean. Anything we throw away can end up there. It kills animals and it pollutes the ocean. It is not right for us to continue letting that happen. There are many ways to address it but for this article, we will talk about habits with clothes and fashion.
Buying your clothes secondhand reduces your carbon footprint. Repurposing old clothes and linens or donating them are other options to make sure you’re not contributing to the trash island. Whenever my bath towels become unusable or have holes in them, I’ll cut them up and use them for cleaning rags. I downsize my clothes every so often. Then there are clothes people buy me thinking I’d like it but in actuality, I think fashion is something you have to choose for yourself. I recently used Thredups easy selling service. You sign up, they send you pre postage bags, you put your clothes in them, and they do the rest. You make money but the cut in general is not that great, Thred up takes most of it. I choose to do it anyway out of convenience. I’ve ordered clothes with them and have overall been satisfied with the experience. The goal is to extend the life of the clothes which is why it’s good to donate or sell versus just throwing clothes away.
